Macromorphology (smell): The fungus grows poorly on many artificial substrates. However, the white colonies can reach a size of up to 15 mm in diameter on G25N agar and on M40Y agar the colonies can reach a size of about 55 mm in diameter after 3 weeks at room temperature.

Disease/effect: The "sick building syndrome" may be due to the presence of A. penicillioides and other fungi and their spores in the air.
